This painting was inspired by a midwinter walk in a Scottish wood. Snow had fallen overnight and still clung to the trunks of the Beech trees that stand sentinel at the edge of the wood. The low, misty sun slanting between the branches cast intricate purple shadows on the ground, the pale blue sky above echoed the iciness below, and all was silent save for the crunch of our footsteps.
